This production is an energetic and compelling odyssey into the experiences of the Black man, depicted as an endless, relentless battle between the true self and those stereotypical expectations and limitations placed on him. Typical stereotypes- such as hyper-athleticism, hypermasculinity, sexual deviance, emasculation, homophobia, “the Oreo” and “the Desultory Junkie” archetypes- are tactfully divided into seven male characters that jointly explore their life trajectories that led to and solidified these personas. The sheer beauty of this opus comes from the raw authenticity conveyed by the actors in bringing the tropes to life, the catharses following their final confrontation of these antagonistic personas, and the final united dedication to put their society-imposed stereotypic personas to death and be reborn into their true selves. It conveys the sense that Black men can be vulnerable together, as a unit, and shed stereotypes in order to be the humans they were meant to be. I think that this powerful message, in the form of this play, should be seen by all Black men in order to plant the seed of removing an unwanted costume and stepping back into life renewed and confident.

We went to go see "black boys cry"! Drove from baton rouge twice! Lol. So worth it! The play was amazing! The actors were passionate! And the operation was organized! Will definitely go to see other plays in the future!

My husband was scrolling through social media and came across this play. We decided to make it date night, but we didn’t know what to expect. This play was phenomenal. It showed the part of black men that no one talks about. The pressure they are constantly under, the image they must uphold and so much more. It’s definitely worth seeing. Take your husband, sons, and all the men in your life.
