We are currently in a tough health and living situation and could not give Shippo the daily exercise she needed to be happy. She had no bite history in her 6 years of life and have co-existed with a cat without ever getting into a fight. We decided to take her in for adoption, under the caveat that if the Ottawa Humane Society ever decides to euthanize her, we be contacted to take her back. Of course we expected no problem... Maybe she would be nervous in an unfamiliar environment, but she has been to day care alongside other dogs multiple times with no issues. We just wanted her to go to a home that could give her the exercise that she needed. We were fully willing to take her back and give her a warm home if she was deemed unadoptable, she would have just gotten minimal exercise until the health problems were resolved. The employee there gave us a lot of reassurance on every step of the way. We left feeling very secure that she would be well taken care of.

Two weeks later, we got a call that she has failed two behavioural tests, been euthanized, and that there was nothing on the file that said to contact us in the case of a euthanization.

The OHS killed our dog.

This is unforgivable. We were constantly checking in to see if she was ready for adoption just to get surprised by a call and left in tears. How can such a big request get lost? How can it be that a "Humane" society decides that the first thing to is to put the dog down without contacting their previous owners? These people pretend to care about animals and are even accepting donations? This is straight incompetency at a very fundamental level.

I highly recommend anybody else to reconsider coming here and to reconsider donating to them. It's honest to god from the bottom of my heart ridiculous.

We were in the emergency room a few days ago dealing with the health complications and now this. What a rough week.

I brought a stray female cat (about 1 year old) to the Ottawa Humane Society on June 7, 2025. I filled out the form to adopt her once she became available for adoption. On July 9, 2025 I called to see if she was available and received the news that she was euthanized due to anorexia and respiratory issues. That didn’t make sense to me, as she was eating well before the appointment. I'm feeling devastated. I wanted to save her life, but the opposite happened.
